If you like to experiment and test and tune - instead of just playing around with something off-shelf - then this thing is for you. I have learned so much about aerodynamics and love to experiment with different plane designs. Not all the experiments actually work (flying is not easy, every additional weight is a challenge), but if they do... you cannot describe this feeling of success with pure words. It's just awesome! Of course, you can also fold rather normal paper plane designs - nearly all of them will just fly like a charm. See here for more interesting information: https://poweruptoys.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/community/topics/360001744972-Airplane-designs-for-POWERUP-modules The app, the steering and the flying experience is just amazing - no matter how old you are. You can instantly fly your own plane! And even the battery guarantees quite a long flight for that small module! There is nothing cooler you can buy... maybe aside from a Powerup 5.0 in the future ;-)
My wife got me the Power Up 4.0 Kit along with their paper airplane book and Airplane templates. It was super easy to follow the directions and within a few minutes I was up and flying. There is definitely a learning curve to the APP and coming from flying Mid Size RC planes for years it was a big adjustment to fly by tilting my phone. I ran into an issue on day 3 and I thought I wasn't going to be able use the device anymore. However the team over at Power Up went above and beyond my expectations and I am forever grateful to them for that,
Excellent looking forward to using them soon! We're going to get some balsa wood and experiment.
Awesome!, don't forget to share your planes with us, you can tag #powerup4 on any social platform or post here in the review. Thanks!
My two sons and I love the PowerUp 4.0! We had supported the project on Indigogo several months ago, and when the box came we couldn’t wait to fly! My sons 14 and 15, had no trouble following the detailed instructions to fold the plane, attach the PowerUp module, and were flying in about 15 minutes! The app was easy to download and even easier to use. They flew their planes until dark and then folded the water resistant Invader, attached the LEDs, and flew for several hours later! They highly recommend the PowerUp 4.0, and as a Dad who worries about screen time, I love the fact that they spent hours outside!! You MUST try this awesome product!!
This is the most amazing little device! With a little creativity, some paper/tape, a PowerUp 4.0 module, and a USB powerbank, you can have an entire afternoon of flight, a chance to teach or explore aerodynamics, or all three! First of all, the PowerUp 4.0 is extremely sturdy, the build quality is fantastic. My only structural concern is the bluetooth antenna, which is a thin wire protruding from a hard plastic protector. In an upside-down/flip crash it could shear off the bulk of the antenna, which would likely require replacement to properly connect again. Other than that, it's got a foam nose cushion to protect against direct impacts, and extra propellers in case you lose one. I've flown a variety of models built from anything from balsa wood, to foam, cardstock, paper, and even parchiment paper (that one doesn't work so well, tape won't stick to it). The PowerUp module tries valliantly to stablize whatever it's attached to. (This gets me thinking: I wonder if anyone has tried flying models built from aluminum foil?) NOTE: for your first few flights try to have a grass field large enough; if you try to fly it around your neighborhood without experience, you may or may not end up stuck up under your neighbor's solar panels! (True story, I did. No damage. He was gracious.) As far as range is concerned, I always fly keenly aware of the fact that the connection is over BTLE, but I've never had it go out of range for me. I've probably reached a max of 200 ft altitude, but make sure your model is pointed in a "safe" direction just in case, because if it disconnects, I suspect it'll just cut power and glide. Each model you build/fly can have dramatically different flight characteristics. I've flown the balsa model in 10-12 mph winds, but for most paper planes you pretty much need still air, if you can find it. Try flying mornings and evenings unless you have a fast model and experience. If it's gusty, probably best to stay land-bound. PowerUp Toys has built positive relationships throughout the enthusiast community, and has worked tirelessly to bring the PowerUp 4.0 to market in a trying year. I've watched them every step of the way, and they deserve to be proud: the PoweUp 4.0 module is an amazing product at an amazing price. Kickstarter Backer #536
The POWERUP 4.0 is a propeller module, power source and flight computer that makes paper planes capable of independent flight. You can add it to any paper, light balsa wood or foam plane. To control the plane, download the POWERUP 4.0 app for iOS or Android.
Very. Tilt your phone left or right to control which way you turn or use the tuning setting in the app to get extra control over your flight.
Yes. As long as it weighs under 20 grams. While its predecessors (the 3.0 and the 2.0) worked best with very precisely folded planes, the 4.0 is powerful enough to fly all kinds of models. We even tested it on a plane made of lettuce leaves… and it worked.
We support any iOS or Android device that has Bluetooth 4.0 and a gyro.
The POWERUP 4.0 has a range of 240 feet. If you go beyond that, the app will lose communication with the bluetooth chip in the propeller and your plane will land.
Thanks to the onboard flight computer and stabilizers, you can use the 4.0 in less-than-perfect weather. If you’re flying a paper plane, it’s still best to avoid rainy days though. And for the smoothest flights, aim for clear, sunny, calm days. The template kit includes waterproof paper incase your are restricted to fly in wet, snowy or damp conditions.
It depends. The POWERUP 4.0 may be a super successful gift if you’re giving it to someone who loves making paper airplanes, loves creating things and loves flying. The 4.0 is also a great starter gift for anyone looking to get into RC flight.
It is really up to you as long as you keep the wing weight below 0.71oz /20grams. POWERUP quick connect accessory systemlets you connect the POWERUP 4.0 module to thin materials like paper and to thicker materials like cardboard, foam and balsa wood in many different ways.
Yes. You can use the 4.0 to give your students a strong foundation in aerodynamics. Crafting a plane from a sheet of paper, adjusting it for a perfect glide and controlling it, provides a challenging yet fulfilling educational experience. And thanks to the extra thrust in the 4.0, you can encourage students to design foam and balsa wood planes and put them to the test too. We recently released an option to download the data of the sensors as well for every flight, this data can be utilized in many creative ways by educators and students.
We designed the POWERUP module to survive most crashes. It’s made with durable carbon fiber rods and polypropylene plastic. The bumper is made with rubber. Still though… no machine is unbreakable. If you run your plane into a wall - repeatedly - your POWERUP may sustain some damage. That’s why we recommend trying to land on something soft - like the grass in your local park.
The POWERUP 4.0 is our most advanced version to date which recently replaced our legacy POWERUL 3.0 model. If you like inventing your own planes we recommend the4.0 Tinkerer collection where you get to explore endless planes using just paper. If you are looking for an entry level RC experience with step by step instructions please head over to our 4.0 Hobbyist collection. the 4.0 is perfect. And if you just want to fly a paper plane without using your phone, then the2.0 could be the one for you.
No. The FAA only requires registration for drones that weigh 0.5 lb/ 250 grams or more. The POWERUP 4.0 weighs less than 19 grams.
You can return an unused product within 30 days of purchase.
We provide a full 1 year warranty on all parts except for the propellers and batteries. Our battery warranty lasts for 6 months from order.
